Background: This study aimed to verify the efficacy of a program for improving social competence among adult burn patients.
Methods: Participants included adults aged 25 to 65 years who had burn injuries on exposed areas consisting of at least 20% of their total body surface area. We used the affect and interpersonal relationship subscales of the Korean version of the Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief to measure the efficacy of the program. The final sample size was 24; with data being collected from September 2017 to December 2018.
Results: We found that participants¡¯ scores for the dimensions of affect and interpersonal relationships increased after the program. We observed an increase in the affect dimension of the BSHS-BK (Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief) from an average of 18.29 to 20.67 before and after the program, respectively. Results indicated a significant increase for patients who are male and had visible burn areas. Moreover, we observed an increase in interpersonal relationship scores, although not statistically significant. A significant increase was found in participants belonging to the ¡°below 46 years¡± age group, and those with visible burn areas.
Conclusions: It has been suggested that improvement of social skills requires training for people and financial support for the program.
